Nastech Pharmaceutical Co. of Bothell told a group of scientists on Wednesday that its research into developing nasally inhaled forms of drugs and other alternatives to injection may have led to the discovery of a new class of molecules. Among other things, its research may shed light on the origin of atherosclerosis, the process that leads to hardening of the arteries.
Everett Clinic rated on quality of care
Premera Blue Cross of Mountlake Terrace has released its 2005 Quality Score Card, which rates The Everett Clinic and other health care providers on 19 different criteria points. The scorecard results can be seen at www.premera.com.
Winnebago profits drop 26 percent
Winnebago Industries Inc., one of the nation’s largest motor-home makers, on Wednesday reported its fiscal first-quarter profit fell almost 26 percent amid higher interest rates and fuel prices. Net income was $14.6 million, or 44 cents a share, in the quarter that ended Nov. 26, down from $19.5 million, or 57 cents a share, a year earlier.
Amgen acquires mouse engineer
Biotechnology titan Amgen Inc. said Wednesday it has agreed to acquire Abgenix Inc. for $2.2 billion in cash and the assumption of debt. Abgenix, based in Fremont, Calif., is a small biotechnology company that genetically engineers mice to produce potential cancer drugs.
E-Trade seeking large money firm
E-Trade Financial Corp. expects to “aggressively” pursue a major deal with a large financial firm or online brokerage starting in next year’s second quarter, a top executive said Wednesday. Highly publicized talks with rivals Charles Schwab Corp. and Ameritrade Holding Corp. earlier this year failed to produce the big deal E-Trade was seeking.
Google to spotlight music, band links
Online search engine leader Google Inc. will begin giving some musical artists the star treatment by spotlighting links to their songs, lyrics and other related material at the top of the results page. The music section, which debuts today, is designed to provide a more direct route to the content that most music fans want to see when they inquire about a singer or band, said Marissa Mayer, Google’s director of Web products.
