WorkSource will host a job fair Tuesday for people interested in working at the Snohomish County Jail. The county’s Corrections Department has immediate openings for jail officers, whose pay starts at $3,139 a month. Applicants must be 21 and pass background checks, psychological and polygraph exams and a physical ability test. Testing will be done at 9 a.m. and noon Tuesday at WorkSource’s office at Everett Station, 3201 Smith Ave.
Google stock continues to soar
Google Inc.’s market value briefly surpassed $100 billion for the first time Friday, its stock scaling new heights after an earnings and revenue spike that astonished investors. The online search leader’s shares traded as high as $346.43 on the Nasdaq Stock Market before backtracking as the day progressed. The shares gained $36.70, or 12.1 percent, to close at $339.90.
Kodak makeover raises questions
Halfway through a four-year digital makeover, as its quarterly losses mount, Eastman Kodak Co. has some analysts wondering if the picture-taking pioneer is headed for a breakup. But even as Kodak reported a $1.03 billion loss for the third quarter, its new leadership – largely recruited from digital heavyweights such as Hewlett-Packard Co. – say the results show they’re making real progress symbolized by a historic milestone: Sales of digital products now exceed revenue from film-based photography for the first time.
Maytag loss bigger than expected
Maytag Corp., the nation’s No. 3 appliance maker that is being acquired by bigger rival Whirlpool Corp., on Friday reported a steeper-than-expected loss in the third quarter amid excess capacity and high prices for oil and materials. Maytag reported a loss of $18.2 million, or 23 cents per share, compared to profit of $7.5 million, or 9 cents per share, a year earlier.
Saab gets contract for Boeing 787 part
Saab has received an order from Smiths Aerospace in Wolverhampton, England, for a high-lift actuation system for the Boeing 787 commercial aircraft. The contract comprises development, production and support of an electric motor controller unit and an electric motor providing backup for actuation of the high-lift actuation system for both the leading edge slats and the trailing edge flaps.
