Zumiez Inc., the Everett-based retailer of action sports gear and clothing, said same-store stores for the four weeks ended Feb. 2 rose by 1.7 percent compared to the same month last year. Total sales for the four-week period, which includes sales from the chain’s new locations, increased 16 percent to $20.7 million. Zumiez ended the period with 285 stores across the nation.
Zipfizz gains more national distribution
Mill Creek’s Zipfizz Corp. said Target, Rite Aid, H-E-B, Bartell Drugs and Vitamin Shoppe are now carrying the company’s flagship energy drink mix, adding to the product’s nationwide distribution. Zipfizz’s drink mix, packaged in single-serving tubes, is marketed as a healthier alternative to other energy drinks. Sales have skyrocketed in the past two years.
Cathay Pacific 777 bears unique look
The Boeing Co. and Cathay Pacific Airways have marked the delivery of the airline’s newest 777-300 Extended Range jet. The Everett-built airplane is painted in the unique “Asia’s world city” livery that will help promote Hong Kong as the aircraft flies around the world. It’s the sixth of 30 777-300ERs for delivery to Cathay Pacific.
Wilcox dairy closing in Pierce County
Wilcox Family Farms is closing its Roy dairy in Pierce County and laying off 130 workers. The company will continue to operate a dairy in Cheney and chicken egg operations in Roy and Aurora, Ore. Jim Wilcox says the company wants to be known for its organic and natural egg products, as its dairy business in Roy has not been profitable.
Todd Shipyards sees revenue fall
Todd Shipyards Corp., the new owner of Everett Shipyard, reported net income of $2.9 million, or 50 cents per share, in the final quarter of 2007. Revenue for the period totaled $39 million, down about 11 percent from the same period last year. That was attributed largely to falling demand for ship repair and new construction work, the company reported Wednesday.
Worker productivity slowed in late 2007
Worker productivity, the key factor in rising living standards, slowed sharply in the final three months of 2007 as overall economic activity weakened considerably. The U.S. Labor Department reported Wednesday that productivity, the amount of output per hour of work, increased at an annual rate of 1.8 percent in the October-December quarter, down from a 6 percent rise in the July-to-September quarter.
Sara Lee posts a healthy quarter
Sara Lee Corp. said strong international beverage and bakery sales helped the food maker post a $182 million profit during its last quarter. The 25 cents-per-share earnings contrasted with the company’s performance during the same October to December period last year, when it lost $62 million, weighed down by special items. Revenue climbed nearly 10 percent to $3.49 billion in the most recent period.
