Qwest executive joins Unova board
The Unova Inc. board of directors has added Oren Shaffer, vice chairman and chief financial officer of Qwest Communications International Inc. He will become a member of the audit and compliance and compensation committees for Everett-based Unova, parent company of Intermec, also of Everett.
10,000 in South seek jobless aid
An estimated 10,000 workers who lost their jobs because of Hurricane Katrina filed for unemployment benefits last week, the first wave of what is expected to be hundreds of thousands of displaced workers seeking benefits. The Labor Department said Thursday the figure was an estimate of the number of disaster-related claims based on spot checks with claims offices in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and neighboring states such as Texas that have agreed to accept benefit applications from relocated workers. Overall, 319,000 newly laid off workers filed claims last week, a drop of 1,000 from the previous week.
Freddie Mac urges mortgage refunds
In what may be a first for the U.S. housing market, banks are being encouraged to return the most recent mortgage loan payments from people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Freddie Mac, one of two government housing agencies, said Thursday it has asked banks to return September mortgage payments already made by anyone in the stricken areas. Also, the housing agency has asked lenders to return any September mortgage payments if borrowers ask for their money back.
Microsoft releases new software tools
Microsoft Corp. is releasing several new tools to help developers build software applications that work with its online search and communication products. The hope is that such add-ons will draw more users to Microsoft products and help the company better compete with market leaders such as Google Inc. and America Online Inc. Microsoft said Thursday the tools are for add-ons to its desktop, Internet and localized search technologies, as well as its MSN Messenger instant messaging program.
