Comcast will carry high-definition broadcasts of both Mariners and Sonics games in the coming year in addition to adding more cable TV channels in the crisper format.
The primary cable TV provider for Snohomish County has a new agreement with FSN Northwest to carry a minimum of 35 Sonics games in HD, including Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Additionally, a few Pac-10 college football games will be broadcast in HD in the coming weeks. Next spring and summer, up to 65 Mariners games will be broadcast in HD.
“One of the big driving factors for high definition is sports, just because the picture is so much better in HD,” said Comcast spokesman Steve Kipp.
The wide-screen picture used in the HD format also is well suited to most sports, he added.
In addition to the new HD sports broadcasts, Comcast is adding the Music High-Definition and Universal HD channels to its lineup as of Dec. 15.
Music High Definition blends programming from MTV, VH1 and CMT to cover a wide range of music genres in the HD format.
Universal HD offers popular programs that have aired on NBC, Bravo, USA Network and the Sci-Fi Channel in high definition.
With these new channels, most local subscribers to Comcast’s digital cable service now have up to 19 HD channels.
