Delta Air Lines plans to order 100 Boeing Co. 737 jets, Bloomberg News reported on Monday.
The order is for Boeing 737-900 Extended Range jets and valued at nearly $8.6 billion at list prices. Airlines typically pay discounted prices. Delta will use the 737s to replace its 757s and MD-88s – neither are still in production.
The deal is a win in more ways than one for Boeing, which had to settle for the smaller share of American Airlines’ single-aisle aircraft order in July. American was wooed by Airbus’ A320 New Engine Option jet. Boeing was forced to tentatively offer to re-engine its 737, which its board is expected to approve this month.
Delta has both Boeing and Airbus jets in its fleet, having picked up Airbus planes when the carrier bought Northwest Airlines. Airbus and Boeing made sales pitches to Delta last week, reports The Wall Street Journal. Delta could make an announcement on the order later this week, according to the WSJ report.
