Emirates Airlines has placed an order for 50 of the Boeing Co.’s 777 jets, the companies announced Sunday.
The order, valued at $18 billion, is the single largest by value in Boeing’s history. The deal was announced Sunday at the Dubai Air Show.
Emirates’ order also makes this the best-selling year for Boeing’s 777. Boeing has won 182 net orders, including the Emirates’ deal, so far in 2011. The previous highest-selling year for the 777 was 2005 when Boeing recorded 154 orders.
“The 777’s reliability, performance and operating economics have firmly established it as the backbone of our fleet,” Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Airline, said in a statement.
Emirates ordered 50 Boeing 777-300 Extended Range aircraft and took options for 20 more.
“As the largest operator of the 777 in the world, Emirates has played an important role in development of the airplane and its input over the years has been invaluable in the development of the 777 program,” Jim Albaugh, president of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, said in a statement.
