EVERETT — Everett Shipyard, a subsidiary of Todd Shipyards, has won a $9 million contract to build a caisson for the U.S. Navy.
The caisson is a huge, reinforced steel gate used to keep water out of a special drydock at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
Kevin Quigley, president of Everett Shipyard, said the project isn’t all-new to the company.
“We did one of these a number of years ago, in the late 1990s,” Quigley said.
Preparation work for the project will begin immediately, with a completion date set for March 2010, according to Todd Shipyards.
Quigley said he expects about 40 people to be assigned to the caisson construction, which will take place at the shipyard facilities on Everett’s waterfront. Combined with other expected work, Everett Shipyard may need to hire more people in the near future, he added.
The caisson’s home at the Bremerton naval shipyard will be Dock No. 3, which dates to 1919. It was innovative because of the way it floods with water to launch new and repaired vessels instead of sliding vessels into the water from an incline.
Todd Shipyards bought Everett Shipyard, which has done major work on the state ferries in recent years, at the beginning of this year for an undisclosed sum. Todd also operates yards in Seattle and Bremerton.
