Aerospace training programs at Edmonds Community College could get a $500,000 boost courtesy of the federal government.
The U.S. House of Representatives OK’d the 2010 education spending bill, which includes the half-million dollar deal for EdCC. The Senate still has to approve the bill, which also requires the president’s signature.
Reps. Jay Inslee and Rick Larsen, D-Wash., worked to secure the $500,000, which will be used to buy equipment for the community college’s National Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Innovation Center.
“These funds would aid the development of education and training programs for Snohomish County’s future aerospace workers, ensuring our continued status as a leader in the industry,” Inslee said.
Edmonds Community College already offers an Associate of Applied Science degree. Among the programs being developed at the college are: Composites Technician Certificate Program; Materials Science Technology Courses and Degree Programs; Product Lifecycle Management Certificate; and Global Training Programs.
“In Washington state, investing in aerospace is about creating good-paying jobs in our community,” Larsen said.
Training and education in the field of aerospace in the state has become a hot topic of late. Boeing and other aerospace companies in the region mentioned the need for increased training at yesterday’s “Saving Washington Aerospace” summit. And Snohomish County and the Aerospace Futures Alliance announced a new training center in Everett last month.
