Get ready for the Attack of the Tiny Engines, as Ford and General Motors start production of a new generation of fuel-efficient little power plants.
Ford’s 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine produces 123 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. It will power European versions of the Focus compact and C-Max and B-Max small minivans.
Ford says the engine’s output matches the power of a larger 1.6-liter engine, thanks to turbocharging and direct gasoline injection. Ford expects to eventually build 1.3 million of the engines around the world.
GM’s new engine plant in Uzbekistan builds 1.2- and 1.5-liter four-cylinder engines. Like Ford, GM expects to sell its new small engines around the world.
The plant’s first engines will power the Chevrolet Spark, which accounts for an astounding 94 percent of new car sales in Uzbekistan.
