The Long Beach Press-Telegram http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_3513345 does a nice job of summarizing the latest tanker hub-bub in today’s edition. (Although, note to Felix Sanchez — Washington’s junior senator is Maria Cantwell … not Marian.)
Key Quote: “A coast-to-coast whirlwind of raised hopes and then dashed prospects was triggered over the last two days by speculation that a new military tanker plane might be built in Long Beach if the current C-17 Globemaster III program is discontinued.”
Officially, Boeing is saying that it is not planning to move 767 tanker production from Everett to Long Beach, Calif.
“Our assumption has always been that we would build 767 tankers for the U.S. Air Force in Everett, Washington, where commercial 767s and 767 tankers for Italy and Japan are currently produced,” the company said in a statement a spokeswoman e-mailed to me this morning. “Again, our base case assumption, pending a review of the final requirements, is that a U.S. Air Force tanker based on the 767 would be built in Washington state.”
