I chuckled a little when I saw Google changed its logo last week to mark the 50th anniversary of Sputnik’s launch. It didn’t cross my mind that the employees behind the world’s most ubiquitous search engine might be just big ol’ commies.
That’s kind of what some critics are saying, pointing out that Google’s designers commemorate all sorts of obscure and eco-friendly holidays (World Water Day, anyone?). But the logo hasn’t changed on Memorial Day and other All-American holidays, they charge.
On the other hand, those Google guys are obviously all for capitalism. Look at the company’s stock, which surpassed $600 a share on Monday and seems unstoppable. As the Associated Press points out, “hundreds” of Google employees are millionaires.
There are some fun links related to this story. First, look at the ways Google has altered its logo over the years to mark different holidays and notable dates. Also, Google has posted some of the customized logos that devoted fans of the site have created.
Finally, here are some of the suggested logos that people submitted to zombietime.com to show that Memorial Day can be tastefully marked with an altered Google logo. I think some of them are quite good.
