You win.
A number of people called or wrote to say they wanted us to add WinCo to our monthly price check of local grocers. So we’re doing that starting today.
Initially, we didn’t include WinCo because there are only two stores in Snohomish County, one in Silver Lake and the other in
Marysville, and we thought that meant many readers didn’t have access to them.
But many of you said you went out of your way to get there at least once a month or so because the prices were so good. So we’re adding it.
WinCo did have the lowest prices when we checked earlier this week on seven basic items.
Several people also suggested that we change some of the items that we check for prices. For example, one reader suggested chicken would be a more healthy choice for people than our one pound of ground beef. She also suggested that Adams peanut butter was healthier than Jif.
We don’t disagree.
But we’re not inclined to change the items unless we have to.
The list is a modified version of one we created several years ago when we did a more exhaustive study of grocery store prices. It was created with the advice of food professionals and was intended to represent what average people buy frequently, not necessarily what is healthier for them.
Keeping the items the same also gives us the option of writing about how prices have changed through the years.
One change we did make, again starting today, is replacing Millstone coffee beans with a store brand.
Millstone used to be the store brand for many grocers, but we’ve recently noticed it has been replaced in some stores.
