Apple Computer Inc.’s online music store, iTunes, recorded a small profit in the current quarter, according to chief executive Steve Jobs. The company marked the one-year anniversary of the launch of iTunes on Wednesday, noting that it sold more than 70 million songs at 99 cents each in that time. Despite the company missing its own forecast of 100 million songs sold, Jobs said he still believed iTunes made an impressive showing. “I think the growth rate has been phenomenal,” he said during a conference call. ITunes is now selling 2.7 million songs a week, or a rate of 140 million songs a year.
Lumera Corp., a subsidiary of Bothell-based Microvision, has secured $2.3 million in financing from the sale of convertible notes and stock warrants. In March, Microvision stated in a financial filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that Lumera could run out of money by May without additional financing. Lumera, which employs 34 of the 191 people working at Microvision, is developing devices that speed up data transmissions on fiber-optic networks.
Helix BioMedix Inc. of Bothell said a three-month independent test found that the company’s anti-wrinkle peptide compared favorably with Renova, a federally approved product. The peptide, a small protein with skin-healing properties, reduced the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes of 69 percent of the participants in the test. In 35 percent of the participants, the improvement was “marked or moderate.” Those percentages were close to those found among patients using Renova. However, Helix’s peptide didn’t cause any noticeable irritation, which is a known side effect of Renova and other products. Helix said it is in discussions with several cosmetic companies interested in using the peptide.
