Here’s a formidable foe for health care reform: the golden arches.
McDonald’s Chief Executive Officer James Skinner isn’t saying he’s opposed to some of the ideas floating around Washington D.C. right now. But he’s not saying he’s on board with them, either.
Skinner told a group of reporters in Boston today that 85% of McDonald’s outlets in the U.S are operated by franchisees. And he’s worried about what raising requirements could do to owners.
“Franchisees at McDonald’s are small business people. And we can’t solve the world’s problems on the backs of small business people,” he said.
At the same Boston event, he said customers are in a mode of retreat right now when it comes to spending, which certainly mirrors this month’s wilting level of consumer confidence.
“People are rethinking their spending habits and embracing a new sense of frugality,” Skinner said.
His plan? Focusing on healthier food and customer service.
