MUKILTEO — Production Plating of Mukilteo has been fined $11,000 for unsafely storing hazardous material and repeatedly failing to submit timely information about its industrial wastewater, according to the Washington state Department of Ecology.
State workers observed at the metal plating and finishing firm strong acids in the same storage compartments as strong bases and cyanide salts. The company’s permit requires it to store these materials separately to ensure that spills or leaks do not reach water or generate dangerous reactions, which could produce toxic fumes.
The company at 4412 Russell Road is also required to monitor the industrial wastewater that it discharges into the sewer system.
The company failed to submit several monthly reports in 2011, according the ecology department. The company didn’t turn in the reports until more than a year later in early 2013.
Production Plating may appeal the penalty.
