EVERETT – A new Burgermaster restaurant on Evergreen Way plans to offer the family-owned chain’s milkshakes and cheeseburgers by summertime.
The former Burger King location at 7909 Evergreen Way is being converted into a Burgermaster, with a planned opening in June.
Founded in 1952 by Phil Jensen, Burgermaster operates an old-fashioned drive-in eatery along the Bothell-Everett Highway near Mill Creek.
That restaurant, along with ones in Seattle’s University Village and Bellevue, is still owned by the Jensen family. Burgermaster restaurants in Shelton and north Seattle are run by franchisees.
Michele and Jack Simmons, who owned the north Seattle location until 2002, are the duo behind the new Everett restaurant, which officially is a franchised location. But Michele Simmons has strong family ties to Burgermaster, as she’s the daughter of the founder and sister to Bob Jensen, who runs the family business today.
The Simmonses, who live in Shoreline, said they plan to serve lunch and dinner meals at first, but they hope to add Burgermaster’s breakfast selection after the restaurant is up and running for a while.
Unlike the Mill Creek restaurant, which was built in 2002, the Everett Burgermaster won’t include the 1950s-style drive-in service. Because of the property’s size and the existing fast-food building, it will serve sit-down customers and those who go through the drive-through lane, Michele Simmons said.
The Simmonses bought the nearly one-acre property and 24-year-old Burger King building for $1.1 million in December, according to county property records. Remodeling work is now ongoing.
Michele Simmons added that she and her husband are optimistic about the location, which backs up to Cascade High School’s campus and is close to Evergreen Way’s intersection with Highway 525.
“We’re real excited about Everett,” she said.
