Nutritional information will migrate from the back to the front of packaging with a new labeling system that food makers and grocery stores are introducing.
The voluntary system lists calories, saturated fat, sodium and sugars per serving. The Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Food Ma
rketing Institute announced what they’re calling “Nutrition Keys” on Monday.
The system replaces an industry program called “Smart Choices” that the FDA said was misleading.
Most food makers and retailers, including ConAgra Foods Inc. and Campbell Soup Co., are backing “Nutrition Keys.”
They will add the labels to most packaging by the end of 2011 but also keep the federally mandated nutrition information on package backs. The industry is launching “Nutrition Keys” with a $50 million marketing campaign.
