EVERETT — Port of Everett officials are considering a number of projects for 2008 that will improve public access to the waterfront.
They include:
Spending $1 million to create a public path on the port’s Riverside Industrial Park property along the Snohomish River near Highway 529 that connects north Everett with Marysville. The uses at the industrial park will determine whether the path directly follows the river or instead travels along W. Marine View Drive for a portion of its length.
Spending $105,000 to upgrade facilities on Jetty Island. The port is working with the city of Everett and seeking grants to build a pole building that could be used as a shelter for nature talks in inclement weather. It also would like to place a solar-powered restroom on the island, which doesn’t have running water or electricity.
Spending $282,731 for major improvements to the waterfront park near the 10th Street boat launch. The money would place large rock on the shoreline to prevent erosion and also would install things like picnic shelters, playground equipment and an amphitheater. The money to pay for this project has not been secured.
In related action, John Mohr, the port’s executive director, is in Washington, D.C., seeking funding for a project that would allow the federal Corps of Engineers to dredge more deeply, more often and in a broader area at the settling basin near Jetty Island. Removing river sediment from the area would help clear the port’s harbor and marina areas and also provide material that could be used to expand Jetty Island, a popular summer recreation area. The work requires approval by Congress.
Spending $45,000 to clear some guy wires now intruding on the Pidgeon Creek trail that gives people access to a waterfront beach.
