Plastic film manufacturer Achilles USA has completed a $13 million expansion at its Everett facility.
The company is celebrating its production expansion in a private ceremony Tuesday at its plant at 407 80th Street SW, Everett. The company opened its manufacturing site in Everett in 1974.
“This is a significant expansion for not only the city of Everett but for Snohomish County,” Troy McClelland, chief executive of Economic Alliance Snohomish County, said in a statement.
The new plant is an expansion designed solely for the production of polypropylene film. Specialized equipment from Germany represents a significant percentage of the investment.
Traditional film products, including those from Achilles, are made from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. There are recycling challenges associated with some uses of PVC. In response, Achilles has developed a product line using polypropylene, which is better for the environment.
Achilles USA makes plastic films used in many applications and components for products including tents, school notebooks, medical bags and marine windows. Additionally, Achilles manufactures a line of inflatable boats.
“We applaud Achilles on its expansion in Everett,” Mayor Ray Stephanson said in a statement. “We are fortunate this progressive company, that has been doing business in Everett for more than 30 years, made the decision to expand right here.”
Achilles employs 160 people at its 40-acre site. The company produces 60 million pounds of film products for the U.S. market.
