EVERETT — The Port of Everett will soon offer boaters a wireless connection to the Internet that will offer more than just access to the web.
"It’s another amenity that makes Everett a good place to visit," said Kim Buike, marina manager.
Buike said the company Broadband Xpress will be installing towers at the marina that will allow subscribers to access the Internet, both while tied up at the marina or while visiting other areas of Puget Sound.
He said the company plans to install equipment at 36 locations around the Sound to help boaters. Customers would be required to pay a monthly fee. Short-term visitors at the marina could also pay a daily use fee, Buike said.
The system won’t cost the port anything. But the port will get a percentage of the sales, Buike said.
In addition to Internet access, boaters will also be able to keep an eye on their boat from home or other locations.
Port commissioner Don Hopkins, an avid boater, said owners can install security cameras on their boat and use the Internet access to keep an eye on their vessel at all times.
"They can be at home and watch their boat," he said. "All they need is a laptop."
Buike said many boats, particularly newer yachts, also have monitoring equipment that allow owners to study boat equipment readouts from any location .
