PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend Paper says it is converting its main fossil fuel source from oil to compressed natural gas to cut greenhouse gas emissions and boost efficiency.
The Peninsula Daily News reported that the company completed the first of three stages in July when it converted the plant’s package boiler to natural gas.
The next phase is expected this month and involves converting the lime kiln to run partially on natural gas.
Finally, the mill will switch its biomass boiler to run on natural gas.
Kevin Scott, the facility’s engineering and environmental manager, says all three phases should be done by October. He says these conversions will allow the mill to cut emissions by 25 percent from its current level.
The mill is located in Port Townsend, which is at the northeast tip of the Olympic peninsula.
