Cranes placed the last steel beam on the framework of the $500 million Providence Regional Medical Center in north Everett Oct. 5, marking major progress on the 12-story tower that will open for patients in August 2011.
The 680,000-square-foot, twin tower building is the largest facility in the Providence Health and Services’ five-state, 150-year history, as well as being one of the largest investments in Snohomish County. Construction work began Sept. 27, 2008.
Designed by Zimmer Gumnsul, Frasca LLP and built by M. A. Mortenson, the facility includes an entire floor dedicated to emergency care, with 78 rooms for patients.
Already one of Puget Sound’s busiest emergency centers, the present facility is expected to serve 105,000 to 110,000 patients in 2009.
PRMC CEO David Brooks told the crowd gathered for the “topping off” ceremony that the number of patients coming to the emergency room has been growing at 5 to 7 percent annual in recent years. The expanded facility is expected to serve as many as 150,000 people each year.
Servicing a five-county area, the regional facility will provide up to 368 patient rooms, initially opening with 300 rooms. Other highlights of the new hospital will include a diagnostic imaging floor with six imaging suites equipped with four CTs and two MRIs; two floors dedicated to surgical and intervention procedures; 104 intensive care patient rooms on two floors and four floors of acute care rooms with 56 beds on each floor.
