The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is up for sale, a move that could make Seattle a one-newspaper town, the newspaper reported today on its Web site.
The announcement comes a day after a TV report that indicated the upcoming sale. If no one steps forward to buy the daily paper, the P-I could cease operation, leaving The Seattle Times as the only daily in Seattle. The P-I, first published in 1863 with a different name, is the state’s oldest paper in the state.
The two newspapers have a joint operating agreement, which requires the P-I to be offered for sale for at least 30 days before it can cease operation.
Steve Swartz, president of Hearst Newspaper Division, told the newsroom that Hearst Corp. is starting a 60-day process to find a buyer, according to the paper’s Web site. If a buyer is not found, Swartz said, possible options include creating an all digital operation, or shutting down the paper.
