Singapore Airlines this morning confirmed that it plans to order 18 extended-range 777s from the Boeing Co.
The airline said it has signed a letter of intent to make the deal with Boeing. The two sides still must negotiate a final agreement, which will likely take “several weeks,” a Boeing spokesman said.
Along with the 18 firm orders for 777-300ERs, the airline will take options on 13 more. The deal would be worth roughly $3.7 billion at list prices, or $6.3 billion if it orders all 31 of the Everett-built jets. However, it’s likely that the airline received a discount.
The deal will make SIA the world’s largest operator of 777s, with 77.
The airline will not become a launch customer for the 7E7, however. SIA had asked Boeing and Airbus to offer proposals for regional jets, but neither Boeing’s new Dreamliner nor Airbus’ A330-200 met the airline’s “financial criteria,” SIA officials said.
