SEATTLE — Facing weaker sales made worse by the economic impact of the terrorist attacks two weeks ago, Nordstrom said Tuesday it will cuts jobs across the company and reduce hours for some sales employees at its clothing stores.
The company would not disclose how many jobs are being cut. Spokeswoman Shasha Richardson said the reductions would affect employees at stores across the country, but it’s not yet clear whether corporate jobs would also be affected.
"We are looking at every aspect of the business," Richardson said.
The retail industry already was weakening when the terrorist attacks occurred, and Richardson said Nordstrom already was struggling with mostly flat sales and had been looking at ways to cut costs.
Nordstrom usually lays off employees after the holiday season, Richardson said, and is constantly adjusting workers’ hours in various stores. It wasn’t clear, however, the last time the company was forced to make retail job cuts not related to the holiday season spike.
Separately, the company said it was donating to the American Red Cross 1 percent of all sales made between Sept. 28 and Oct. 8 at its Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack and Nordstrom.com stores. The company is guaranteeing a minimum $1 million donation.
Shares in Nordstrom were down 20 cents, at $16, at the end of trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
