The first time I wrote about Max and Jennifer Jensen was in 2005 when I was a business-reporting intern here at the Herald. At the time, the Jensen’s were running the Griffins Crossing winery out of the garage of their Lake Stevens home.
I remember interviewing Jennifer in the tasting room at their home one morning. “It’s really a passion,” she told me. “It doesn’t even feel like work. We’re kind of open and seeing where that takes us.”
Here’s where it took them: They opened Sojen Cellars on Hewitt Avenue in Everett today.
The winery and tasting room is located at 2818 Hewitt Ave next to the Terracotta Red restaurant.
They had to change the name of the business due to a legal dispute with another winery. But yes, there’s a story behind the new name.
Max had this to say in an email to fans of the winery: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to make this change, but like the Phoenix, we will rise from the ashes as Sojen Cellars, a nickname that I used to call Jen when we talked on the phone because I was nervous and kept asking her, ‘So Jen, what are you doing?’”
More information should be available soon at the winery’s Web site.
