There are times when you will want to hide your identity online. You may want to prevent a cyber thief from finding out who you really are by learning your IP address, a series of numbers that identifies your computer. In short, your PC broadcasts its IP address, but Surf Anonymous makes you untraceable to all but the most sophisticated hackers.
You may want to visit a website that would otherwise restrict you, and you may want to send anonymous emails to Nigerians who offer you untold riches if only you will send them a few thousand dollars, which you’ll never see again. If those descriptions fit your profile, Surf Anonymous for Windows PCs will give you a brand new U.S. IP address, which will make you invisible to most hackers and other miscreants. It does its work by assigning a proxy IP address, one that acts as if it is yours.
Surf Anonymous is free, installs in seconds, offers you an icon on your web browser’s tool bar and tells you what IP address you’re currently using. You can set the program to change IP addresses every few minutes or just when you call up your browser.
And you can turn it all off and get your real IP address back. I wouldn’t recommend this program for CIA operatives, but for most surfers it should be adequate.
The free version will give you a proxy address only in the United States. Pay about $50 for a lifetime license ($30 for a one-year license), and you’ll be able to use IP addresses from foreign lands, including Nigeria. But don’t get any ideas about sending out e-mail blasts offering million-dollar windfalls.
