China Air is trying to quash a report in a Taiwanese newspaper that says it has decided to buy 10 747-8 passenger jets from Boeing. Economic Daily News in Taipei reports the deal is all but done, reports AFX. http://www.forbes.com/business/feeds/afx/2006/04/26/afx2701259.html
Key Quote: “The newspaper report said the two companies are expected to sign the 2.5 bln usd deal by the end of June, making China Airlines one of Boeing’s first customers for the new 747-8.”
But China Air’s spokesman maintains that the airline has not yet decided between 747-8s or A380s, says Bloomberg News.

Key Quote: “China Air needs aircraft that can carry more than 400 passengers each to fly on long-haul routes to the U.S. and Europe, said Chairman Philip Wei on March 16. It will choose between the 555-seat A380 made by Airbus SAS and Boeing’s 747-8, he said.”
My guess? China Air has opted for 747-8s, but doesn’t want to acknowledge that because it fears losing leverage on price. But that’s just a guess.
