Boeing Co. officials could have a few more sleepless nights as they wait for the Air Force’s decision on a lucrative tanker contract.
The Air Force’s top weapons buyer told Reuters the decision could come Friday.
“It’s absolutely not going to happen today,” Sue Payton, assistant secretary for the acquisition, told Reuters following a Congressional hearing on the Armed Service’s 2009 budget request. “We’re really making sure all the ‘i’s’ are dotted and ‘t’s’ are crossed.”
While Payton may be tight-lipped on the winner, someone apparently let it slip to the Malaysia Sun, which reported Tuesday that Boeing’s competitor Northrop Grumman and its partner EADS have won the deal. The publication didn’t use any attribution in the story and the account has not been reported elsewhere. However, the Malaysia Sun’s report is getting a fair amount of press – showing up in the latest story in the Press Register in Alabama and on Flightblogger.
