“Biotech’s diet in a bottle could extend your life.” How’s that for an eye-catching headline? It appears over a new BusinessWeek story, http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_12/b3976007.htm?campaign_id=rss_magzn, that talks about biotech firms working on calorie restricting drugs. It doesn’t mention Nastech Pharmaceutical’s PYY nasal spray by name, but that would certainly come under that category — assuming the drug works.
BusinessWeek’s story suggests that companies are working on these drugs as treatments for obesity and diabetes, but they may appeal to a wider audience as anti-aging tools, which would mean big sales figures.
Key quote: “They’re not youth pills, but they offer ways of intervening in the specific mechanisms of aging,” said Ronald M. Klatz, president of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
