A 36-year-old serial entrepreneur in Palo Alto, Calif., who grew up poor but was taught to give back wants to make the world a better place — one purchase at a time.
Pankaj Shah, who made his money in wireless broadband and made his name in recent years crusading against junk mail, has started a Web site to promote goodness through the stories it tells and the merchandise it sells.
Tonic (tonic.com) joins an array of online ventures that want people to shop with a conscience.
“We want to be fun and credible and make it easy for people to do good,” said Shah, who has recruited celebrities including Donna Karan to his board. “So much news today is dire and apocalyptic. I’m 100 percent convinced that amazing stories are happening every day.”
