People who have added active solar energy to their homes will open them to visitors Oct. 2 in a tour sponsored by the Snohomish County Public Utility District.
The tour, part of the Green Everett Renewable Living Fair, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some 16 homes in the county and on Camano Island are included in the self-guided tour, and owners will be available at 15 of them to answer questions.
“The solar tour is another example of how the PUD is promoting clean, locally generated resources among our customers,” PUD Commission President Toni Olson said in a statement. “We’re proud to be a leader in the development of renewable energy in the Pacific Northwest.”
The Green Everett fair will take place at PUD headquarters, 2320 California St. in Everett, and will include speakers, children’s activities and informational booths.
Topics include developing neighborhood gardens, keeping backyard chickens, providing cheap transportation and others. Visitors also will be able to exchange up to five incandescent light bulbs for free compact fluorescent light bulbs.
PUD officials said the agency installed more than 40 solar projects last year. The PUD exports to do 60 more this year.
Residential customers can qualify for up to $2,500 for solar systems and commercial customers can qualify for up to $10,000, officials said.
All customers with electric hot water systems can qualify for a $500 incentive for solar hot water systems. Residential customers may instead opt for a 2.9 percent loan up to $25,000 for solar photovoltaic systems and up to $14,000 for solar hot water systems. Customers also may qualify for additional federal tax credits and annual state production incentives.
