SHORELINE — The popular grocery chain Trader Joe’s plans to open a new store in Shoreline in 2015.
The Monrovia, California-based company confirmed Friday that it has signed a lease for roughly 10,300 square feet at 1201 N. 175th St. in Shoreline. The space was formerly a Top Foods store near North Aurora Avenue.
The grocery chain has 14 stores in Washington, and plans to open one in Kent this year. All current and planned sites are in the metro Puget Sound area with most in King County.
Trader Joe’s has two stores in Snohomish County, one in Lynnwood and another in Everett. They are the chain’s two northernmost locations in the state.
The chain buys directly from food producers rather than distributors, allowing it to offer items under its own label and often below the prices of similar items on competitors shelves.
The savvy retailer has cultivated a distinct brand with a large and loyal following. Shoreline-area shoppers formed a Facebook group to push for a store in the city.
