Utility plans to beef up security after attack

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Pacific Gas &Electric Co. says it plans to install opaque walls at electricity substations as part of an ongoing effort to increase security following the sabotage last April of one of its substations in Silicon Valley.

PG&E spokesman Brian Swanson said Tuesday the utility will also deploy advanced camera systems, enhanced lighting and additional alarms at the substation in San Jose that was attacked, as well as others.

He said the utility is considering a rate increase to pay for the security enhancements.

Millions of people in Santa Clara County were asked to conserve energy after authorities say the substation in San Jose was shot with a high-powered rifle.

Former Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Jon Wellinghoff has characterized the attack as terrorism, though the FBI has disputed that.
