MARYSVILLE – Value Village, the chain of thrift stores that donates to local charities, is opening its newest location today at 1334 State Ave.
The store, which opens its doors at 9 a.m., will carry used clothing and household items, with most sold at 10 percent to 50 percent of their original price.
The location in Marysville Plaza formerly housed a Shop N Save, a thrift chain acquired last year by Savers Inc., the Bellevue-based parent company for Value Village.
“I hope it will do very well. We have loyal customers, and this area is growing,” said Joan Allred, manager of the 39,000-square-foot store and its 28 employees.
Allred, who lives in Arlington, was formerly with Value Village’s store in Lynnwood. The Marysville location is the fourth Value Village in Snohomish County and the chain’s 198th location overall.
Founded 50 years ago, Savers Inc. is a for-profit company that donates money to more than 120 nonprofit organizations in this country, Canada and Australia.
The stores purchase their clothing and other items in bulk from local charities, which are paid based on the volume of items delivered. Value Village stores also accept donated items directly from customers, then pay their charity partners for every received item.
In all, the chain’s stores recycle about 220 million pounds of clothing and household items a year. What is deemed unsuitable for U.S. stores is sold to developing nations or material wholesalers, which convert old clothes into rags, rugs and other items.
The Marysville store will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of King &Pierce Counties and the Moyer Foundation, according to Savers.
