It’s been a while — about three months or more, actually — since I last blogged here. For the past several years, my blog focused specifically on one of my more interesting beats: biotechnology.
I’ll still blog about biotech-related stuff here from time to time, but I wanted to expand this to encompass just about anything tech-worthy, especially consumer-oriented technology.
As the fanatics camping outside stores for the iPhone and “Halo 3” can attest, people get emotional about their personal technology. The death of my family’s cellphone last week created a crisis that won’t be fully resolved until the package comes with our new Nokia 6133.
Yeah, I’m a cheap cellphone guy. It gets dropped too much by me, my wife and our children. If I had an iPhone, it would probably be no time until it became a $500 brick that didn’t work. A sleek, cool-looking brick, but still unusable.
In fact, in my home life, I’m not someone who has rooms full of the latest, greatest technology. I think I’m more like the average person, despite writing about and closely following tech news. I don’t yet have a digital video recorder, just a VCR. My TV’s more than twice as old as my oldest son and my home computer is running on 20th-century circuit boards.
So when reading about new, cool technology, I usually have two questions in mind: Why is this cool? And is this something that really could enhance the life of a regular person like me? I think MP3 players like the iPod fall into that category, as do wireless phones, TiVo units and PCs.
Anyway, in short, I hope to keep you updated on new tech stuff with a practical bent, but I’ll also throw in some tidbits about the more frivolous gadgets that are just flat-out fun to talk about.
Is there anything you would add to the list as a “must-have” techy gadget that enhances your life? As always with my blog, I welcome e-mails, questions and comments to me.
