It can be difficult to select good books for babies and toddlers from the masses that are out there. The annual “Best Books for Babies,” inspired by Fred Rogers (“Mr. Rogers”), is published by a Pittsburgh literacy group called Beginning With Books (www.beginningwithbooks.org):
1. “1, 2, Buckle My Shoe” ($16), written and illustrated by Anna Grossnickle Hines. Beautiful quilted pictures illustrate the familiar rhyme.
2. “All About Me!” ($4.99) by Dawn Sirett. Sturdy flaps flip up, down and sideways revealing photos of babies and toddlers showing off their skills.
3. “Baby Signs: A Baby-Sized Guide to Speaking With Sign Language” ($6.99), illustrated by Joy Allen. A collection of basic signs to encourage communication.
4. “Calm &Soothe” ($4.99), illustrated by Sanja Rescek. Sweet pictures accompany simple rhymes and lullabies.
5. “Haiku Baby” ($6.99), written and illustrated by Betsy Snyder. Poems and cheerful illustrations celebrate the natural world.
6. “Just Like You” ($10.99), written and illustrated by Emma Dodd. The story of a young bear demonstrates how adults are role models for children.
