For more than 50 years, the compact Toyota Corolla has been synonymous with dependability, fuel efficiency, safety and value, making it the best-selling nameplate in history.

This year Toyota extends the model’s range with the all-new 2022 Corolla Cross – a bold, compact crossover that includes front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The model joins L, LE, and XLE trims in both sedan and hatchback configurations.

“Our loyal customers love the quality, durability and reliability of Corolla, Lisa Materazzo, group vice president of Toyota marketing said. “With the all-new Corolla Cross we are building upon that foundation and offering more versatility and fun to adapt to their evolving lifestyles.”

Built on the high-strength TNGA-C platform, Corolla Cross delivers a punchy 169-horsepower via a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, dynamic force engine mated to a dual variable vale timing automatic transmission. Cross is rated to tow up to 1,500 pounds, making it light-duty worthy.

The combination enables Cross to achieve high-quality performance, a comfortable ride and outstanding spaciousness, seating up to five adults and delivering 32 miles per gallon fuel economy down the highway. What’s more, the surprising cargo capacity gives it the versatility to accommodate life’s diverse adventures.

My tester included accessories that expand its capability including a roof rack with crossbars, and an activity mount for carrying items such as bicycles, and all-weather floor mats.

And for those who choose AWD, Toyota’s clever dynamic torque control system can direct up to 50% of power to the rear wheels when it’s needed – and disengages completely when it’s not. This feature helps Corolla Cross achieve extended fuel economy.

Exterior features include a distinctive black grille flanked by LED lighting with black body accents – giving the entry-level SUV a confident stance. And from the rear, the design elements continue, with an integrated rear spoiler and LED lighting. A “Celestite Gray” coat of enamel and 18-inch alloy wheels complete the look.

Inside, Corolla Cross’ spacious interior shares many similarities with its sedan and hatchback siblings. The all-new model can be outfitted with a power moonroof, as well as either single- or dual-zone automatic climate control, with all grades featuring standard heating and air conditioning vents for rear seat passengers.

In back, storage space can be maxed out thanks to the 60/40-split folding rear seats that come standard on all grades, while XLE models also include a center armrest with two cupholders. And to make access to the roomy cargo area even more convenient, the Corolla Cross has an available power lift gate with height adjustability.

Creature comforts include a JBL sound system with nine speakers including a subwoofer and amplifier, eight-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging, ambient lighting, SofTex-trimmed and heated front seats, three USB ports, power driver’s seat with lumbar support, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

True to Toyota form, modern safety is key for Corolla Cross. That’s why all grades come standard with both the Toyota Safety Sense suite of advanced active safety systems, as well as Toyota’s signature STAR Safety System.

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert come standard on LE and XLE, while Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking is standard on XLE. Radar cruise control, pre-collision braking, smart key, push-button start and a security alarm system complete the package.
