Mazda launches a brand spanking new model with the introduction of its 2023 CX-50 2.5L Turbo Premium Plus AWD vehicle.
Whether you call it a sports utility or crossover, the CX-50 was designed to enable drivers to extend capability further into the outdoors and various terrains.
“This new Mazda vehicle has been developed for North America, particularly to support the active and outdoor lifestyles of customers in this region,” Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations said. “The CX-50 encourages people to immerse themselves in nature without compromising the premium design and outstanding on-road performance Mazda is known for.”
The first-ever CX-50 emphasizes Mazda’s trademark natural driving experience to help create greater confidence on and off-road. Enhancing this experience, it will be equipped as standard with the latest i-Activ All-Wheel Drive (AWD) technology and new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, or Mi-Drive. The new drive modes can be selected with the Mi-Drive switch and will help the crossover SUV drive naturally in a wide variety of conditions, such as in exciting off-road terrain or providing reliable towing capabilities.
My tester was powered by a Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter turbocharged engine and paired with a responsive six-speed automatic transmission. In the coming years, the CX-50 will also be offered with electrified powertrains, including a traditional hybrid model. It seats up to five adults with a generous cargo area.
The combination generates 227 horsepower, and 310 lb-ft of torque. It is rated at 3,500-pound towing capacity and achieves nearly 30 miles per gallon fuel economy down the highway as rated by the EPA.
The vehicle’s height and length are ideal for easily loading and securing common outdoor equipment. Additionally, the high strength roof rails and reinforced b-pillars and door jambs add to the usability of securing equipment on the roof of CX-50. This all-new vehicle will help encourage customers to explore the outdoors without having to compromise on distinct designs or dynamic driving.
Exterior highlights included 20-inch alloy wheels, rear roof spoiler, power lift-gate, auto power folding and heated side mirrors, and large dual exhaust tailpipes. My CX-50 received a “Polymetal Gray Metallic” coat of enamel.
Interior creature comforts will not disappoint. My favorites included leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated front seats, power-sliding moonroof, Bose audio system with 12 speakers, rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control and 10.25-inch color center display.
Optional equipment included with the Turbo Premium package included heated rear seats, navigation system with traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot prevention, traffic jam assist, roof rails, and a wireless phone charger.
Completing the CX-50 package is a lengthy list of standard safety and security features to ensure confidence in any driving condition or situation. Highlighted features include a lane departure warning system rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, radar cruise control, stability and traction control, smart brake support, driver attention alert and an anti-theft engine immobilizer.
The CX-50 is the first Mazda vehicle to be built at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in
Huntsville, Alabama, with production beginning earlier this year.
