The 2025 Hyundai Kona Limited is a fun-sized SUV wrapped in a futuristic package that is now more capable with AWD an option on all trims.
Now in its second generation, the sub-compact Kona is available in SE, SEL, N Line, Limited and all-electric trims, with a starting price around $24,000 that climbs to $32,000. It is positioned as an upscale multi-player in the small SUV segment.
My tester was powered by a 1.6-liter, turbocharged, inline four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The combination delivers 190 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, adequate for its size.
Kona comes with drive select mode allowing the driver to choose between normal, sport and snow modes. HTRAC all-wheel drive provided a layer of comfort during our recent bout with a small dose of snow and ice.
Exterior highlights include a choice of 10 vibrant colors, 19-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, high beam assist and roof side rails.
With its rugged, dynamic design and upscaled dimensions, the all-new Kona retains its iconic character, supporting active lifestyles for customers of all ages, while offering innovative technologies and convenience features that provide a safe, connected, and comfortable experience.
The two-row Limited provides seating for up to five adults and 25.5 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats. W the seats folded flat, that increases to an impressive 63.7 cubic feet. A hands-free power lift gate is available.
As part of Kona’s new ergonomic layout, the shift-by-wire gear selector has been relocated from the center console to a stalk behind the steering wheel, allowing more storage in the open console area. The layout emphasizes Kona’s larger, wider interior, providing a versatile and comfortable space for driver and passengers.
This impression is further reinforced by the relocation of driver controls around the steering wheel, allowing a multi-use center console storage area with a rotational cupholder design. Ambient interior lighting options are also available that correspond to drive modes, acceleration, or to suit the mood of the driver.
The front seats are 30 percent slimmer to maximize rear passenger legroom and the second-row curve-less bench seat also enhances available space. Front seats are heated and ventilated, and a two-stage latching system allows rear seat reclining.
Other goodies include a Bose, eight-speaker premium sound system with subwoofer, two USB-C ports, a 12V power outlet in the front, as well as two USB-C chargers in the rear, and wireless phone charging.
The new Kona also includes a 12.3-inch navigation and infotainment display screen, a surround view parking monitor, Blue-link, Wi-Fi hotspot, and power sunroof.
Other comfort and convenience features include smart cruise control, highway driving assist, remote parking assistant, dual-automatic temperature control with rear air vents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and push-button start.
Completing the Kona package is an unexpectedly complete list of advanced safety technologies. Highlights include forward collision-avoidance assist, lane-keeping and following assist, driver attention warning, blind spot collision warning rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, parking distance warning and collision avoidance, rearview camera, and safe exit warning.
