Slurpees! They’re free! All day today!
You know you want one. Head to your nearest 7-Eleven and help the quick-stop shop celebrate its star attraction’s, um … uh, fortysomething birthday.
The first such frozen beverage was invented by a hamburger stand owner in Kansas back in 1959, somehow using a car air conditioner on a machine that churned out a slushy carbonated substance. 7-Eleven, the only place you can get a real Slurpee, began selling them in 1965 under the name Icee, making the frosty drink 45 years old.
Today’s much more sophisticated machine combines syrup, carbon dioxode and water to turn out the perfect Slurpee each time at the perfect sipping temperature of 28 degrees.
The free 7.11-ounce drinks will be available from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. today at all 7-Elevens.
