Chips for the health-conscious: A low-calorie potato chip with no oils and zero fat? Crisps, a new snack product by Brothers-All-Natural, sounds like a snacking miracle.
The company marketing whizzes certainly think so. The chatter on the package calls the chips a revolution, “better than baked … much better than fried.”
On the back of the bag they brag, “You are holding in your hands the most innovative potato chip ever made.”
One 1/2-cup serving of the black pepper and sea salt flavor contains 35 calories, and no preservatives. Crisps are made by freeze-drying sliced potatoes.
Too bad Crisps have all the consistency and taste of a crinkled paper bag.
Much like the freeze-dried ice cream made for astronauts, this product does not approximate the sensation of the fat-laden original.
Suggesting these are better than a greasy bag of Lay’s is pure hubris; nothing tastes better than fried. But Crisps are at least as tasty as the baked chip alternatives and they do offer a satisfying crunch.
The company offers four potato chip flavors and many fruit Crisps varieties such as Asian pear.
