A Chef’s Kitchen, a new cooking school in Edmonds, offers students the opportunity to learn from professionally trained, local chefs.

The inaugural cooking class features chef Michael Young of Olives Gourmet Cafe &Wine Bar.

In addition to classes taught by Edmonds chefs, future classes will feature Seattle-area chefs, including Tami Rehm of Ray’s Boathouse, Bill Morris of The Rainier Club and Nick Musser of Icon Grill.

Each chef presents and teaches skills for a menu designed with their specialty in mind. The fall schedule features classes on setting up a sushi bar, seasonal Mediterranean menus, and Thai and Sicilian-inspired cooking. A couple of courses focus on using Northwest ingredients to create fine cuisine.

A Chef’s Kitchen classes are held in a private residence and can accommodate groups of 10 to 12. Students will learn professional cooking skills. Classes are $55 per person.

For information on upcoming classes or to register, call 206-406-1517 or visit www.a-chefs-kitchen.com.

Local bartender wins drink mixing contest

Steve Burney, bartender at Oliver’s at The Mayflower Park Hotel in Seattle, recently was chosen as one of four winners in a contest to create an original Grey Goose vodka signature cocktail.

More than 2,000 recipes were submitted by mail and online, and 48 semifinalists were chosen. In April in New York City, a celebrity judging panel, including Sugar Ray lead singer Mark McGrath, actor and model Tyson Beckford, and New York Jets football player Shaun Ellis, chose the four winning cocktails from the semifinalists.

This fall, Conde Nast Publications and Grey Goose will host gala events in New York, Chicago and Miami to introduce the four Grey Goose cocktails. The events will bring together people from the worlds of fashion, music and design, to celebrate the four winning cocktails. The events will also include special musical performances and food designed by celebrity chefs to pair with the creations.

The Mayflower Park Hotel is at 405 Olive Way, Seattle. For more information, call 206-623-8700.
