The modern dance masterpiece “Revelations” is the signature work of an American classic dance company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
The renowned New York company performs “Revelations” today and Saturday at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle in a mixed-repertoire program.
“Revelations,” choreographed in 1960 by Alvin Ailey, is a seminal work in the modern dance movement that draws on African-American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and blues.
“Revelations” is performed by some of the best-trained artists in the dance world. The Ailey dancers are fast, strong, sleek and athletic, and Seattle audiences will see them showcased in five other dances including “Love Stories,” set to music by Stevie Wonder and inspired by the Lindy hop, Philly bop, hip-hop and eclectic modern dance techniques.
The Alvin Ailey troupe performs at 8 tonight and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Paramount Theatre, 911 Pine St., Seattle. Tickets, $19-$45, are available through Ticketmaster, 206-292-ARTS.

Val Caniparoli’s “The Bridge,” a portrayal of the Bosnian War lovers known as the “Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo,” and the world premiere of “Time and other Matter” created for PNB by choreographer Dominique Dumais, complete the program.
