‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’ on Skagit stage

“Amahl and the Night Visitors,” a one-act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti, is being staged this weekend by Skagit Opera in Mount Vernon.

The first half of the evening will feature Brass Menagerie, a local brass ensemble, and Cantabile of Skagit County, a vocal ensemble, featuring ancient and contemporary holiday music. A 6 p.m. pre-show lecture kicks off the evening, followed by complimentary appetizers.

“Amahl” is the second half of the evening. The opera, done in English and a favorite introductory opera for children, is a Christmas tale of a miracle that is bestowed upon Amahl. This version will include unamplified vocalists and a live orchestra.

Skagit Opera’s cast includes Beth Wallace as the mother, Josh Froebe as Amahl, Scott Rittenhouse as Kaspar, Richard Riddell as Melchior, Ron Wohl as Balthazar and Randy Stewart as the Page.

“Dancing with the Stars – The Tour”: The popular television show will be re-created for a live audience tonight at Seattle Center’s KeyArena.

The two-hour show will have a large replica of the TV show’s actual stage. The setting will be nightclub-style table seating on the floor so fans won’t miss any of the dancing action.

A live orchestra will accompany the dancers with lots of popular tunes that have become a mainstay of “Dancing with the Stars.”

“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play”: The Chicago Sun Times called this holiday show “a fresh and inventive way of reconnecting with a classic story of love and redemption.”

The show continues through Dec. 30 at Taproot Theatre in Seattle.

This stage adaptation by Joe Landry is set in the 1940s as a radio broadcast. It has all the favorite characters from the classic Frank Capra movie.

Karen Lund directs Grant Goodeve, Anne Kennedy, Andrew Litzky, Mark Lund and Lisa Peretti, who play the story’s many characters.
