Trinity Lutheran College’s Playfest production of “The Fantastiks” is the first time the drama program has stepped outside its doors to produce a musical on a community stage at Historic Everett Theatre.
This year’s PlayFest is headed by Scott B. Randall, a longtime member of the local theater scene and founder of the Red Curtain Foundation for the Arts. As Trinity’s drama teacher, Randall wants to develop a full-blown theater program at the college and perform popular and classic works like “The Fantastiks.”
“The Fantastiks” revolves around a pair of small-town fathers who fake a feud to try to get their children, Matt and Louisa, to fall in love. They go so far as to stage Louisa’s kidnapping. Matt rescues her and they fall in love but then learn the feud was a fraud. Does their love survive this foolishness or was that also a farce?
The show comes with a timeless score of songs such as “Try To Remember,” “There Were You” and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain.”
This Trinity production also presents a mix of college and community actors and stage hands, including cast members such as Jeremy Randall, lead singer of Red Curtain’s Hometown Hootenanny series, and local veteran actor Michael G. McFadden.
The goal of the program is to integrate the student body at Trinity with experienced members of the local arts community to increase learning opportunities for the students, Scott Randall said.
“The Fantastiks” opens at 8 tonight at Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave., Everett. Shows are at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $15 and $10. Tickets may be purchased at the Trinity bookstore, 2802 Wetmore Ave., Everett, or online at www.brownpapertickets.com, or at the door before performances.
