ARLINGTON — Local residents of an artistic bent are invited to submit their photographs of eagles and poems and artwork about nature for display at the Arlington-Stillaguamish Eagle Festival on Feb. 3.
Cash prizes from the Arlington Arts Council will be awarded for the best submissions.
The Nature Haiku contest is open to all Snohomish County residents. Haiku poets are challenged to convey a vivid message in the traditional non-rhyming three-line poem. In haiku, there are five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second and five in the third — all without punctuation.
Poets can submit two haikus per entry. Prizes will be awarded in three age groups (K-fifth grade, sixth-12th grade and 19 years and older). First prize in each age group is $50.
Entries must be received by midnight Jan 29. Submit online at arlingtonwa.seamlessdocs.com/f/haiku, by mail to: City of Arlington, Recreation, 238 N Olympic Ave., Arlington, WA 98223, or place in one of the collection boxes at the Arlington Library or Arlington City Hall.
The Eagle Festival also will feature eagle photography and a Nature Art Show, open to Snohomish County and Camano Island residents of all ages and experience levels. Along with a $200 prize, the winning eagle photograph will be printed on the Eagle Festival poster and displayed on the city’s website.
Photographers may enter two eagle shots. Entry fee is $5 each.
Artists are asked to submit art depicting nature for the art show. A People’s Choice winner will receive $200. Ribbons will be presented for first, second and third places in: nature photograph, nature painting, mixed media and two youth categories. Cost is $5 per piece, and artists can submit up to four entries. The children’s entry fee is a donation to the Arlington Food Bank.
To enter the contests, download the application form and additional information at: www.arlingtonwa.gov/eaglefest. Entries must be delivered to the Olympic Theater, 107 S Olympic Ave., from noon to 6 p.m. Feb. 2 (the day before the show).
