Art museums celebrate Black History Month

Closing out Black History Month, the Seattle Art Museum and the future Northwest African American Museum celebrate African American art at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Plestcheeff Auditorium at SAM, 100 University St., Seattle.

The celebration is a partnership between the two museums and highlights the current installation “Africa in America,” which presents a wide range of works from SAM’s collection. The artists represented include James W. Washington Jr., Barbara Thomas, Gwendolyn Knight, Martin Puryear, Marita Dingus, Weldon Butler, Romare Bearden and eight others, with works created between 1942 and 2000.

The speakers Sunday – Carver C. Gayton, director of the Northwest African American Museum, and Pam McClusky, curator of African and Oceanic Art at SAM – will be joined by two local artists featured in the exhibition, Marita Dingus and Barbara Thomas.

The event celebrates the accomplishments of modern and contemporary artists from the African diaspora, which spans the African continent, Great Britain, the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean.

After the presentation McClusky will lead a guided tour of the installation. The event is free with museum admission, $7, $5 students and seniors.
