Author events and poetry readings around Snohomish County

Yuyi Morales: 6 p.m. Sept. 30, Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park, 7171 Bothell Way NE.Morales tells her own immigration story in “Dreamers,” a picture-book tribute to the transformative power of hope and reading. In 1994, Morales left her home in Xalapa, Mexico and came to the U.S. with her infant son. She left behind nearly everything she owned, but she didn’t come empty-handed. She brought her strength, her work, her passion, her hopes and dreams — and her stories. More at www.thirdplacebooks.com.

Olivia Hawker: 7 p.m. Oct. 1, Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park, 7171 Bothell Way NE. Hawker’s latest book, “The Ragged Edge of Night,” is a historical novel set during World War II. It’s Germany, 1942. Franciscan friar Anton Starzmann is stripped of his place in the world when his school is seized by the Nazis. He relocates to a small German hamlet to wed Elisabeth Herter, a widow who seeks a marriage — in name only — to a man who can help raise her three children. Hawker lives in the San Juan Islands. More at www.thirdplacebooks.com.

Darrin Nordahl: 7 p.m. Oct. 2, Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park, 7171 Bothell Way NE. From the brisk waters of Seattle to the earthy mushroom-studded forest surrounding Portland, Nordahl takes readers on a journey to expand their palates with local flavors in “Eating the Pacific Northwest.” An American food and food production writer, Nordahl also is the author of “Eating Appalachia” and “Public Produce.” More at www.thirdplacebooks.com.

Sara Gran: 7 p.m. Oct. 3, Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park, 7171 Bothell Way NE. Gran’s “Infinite Blacktop” is the third in the “Claire DeWitt” series. Claire DeWitt is a hard-living and tough-talking private investigator. She started young. As a girl growing up in Brooklyn, Claire and her two best friends, Tracy and Kelly, fell under the spell of the book “Detection” by legendary French detective Jacques Silette. The three solved many cases together and were inseparable — until the day Tracy vanished. That is still the only case Claire ever failed to solve. More at www.thirdplacebooks.com.

NEW BOOKS

Donna Cameron: The Brier resident has a new book out called “A Year of Living Kindly.” She worked in the nonprofit sector for more than 30 years, where she saw kindness in action, people giving back to their communities and helping others get back on their feet. Being surrounded by all that positivity prompted Cameron to reflect on her own life. So she went on a 365-day journey to learn what it means to live a kind life, which is a lot more challenging than you might think, and it means more than just being “nice.”

Mwati Mwila: Mwila’s memoir “Strengthening Your Identity: While the Shadow is in Front of You” is her debut as an author. We all know that life has its ups and downs, but when the Lynnwood woman was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she thought her life would be mostly down from that point on. In her book, Mwila shares her story of living with bipolar disorder to inspire others to keep on riding the rollercoaster called life. More at www.mwatimwila.com.

Steve K. Bertrand: The Mukilteo author has another haiku book out: “Under Hawk’s Gaze,” centered around seasonal experiences in the Pacific Northwest. Bertrand is the author of many collections of poems written in the Japanese verse form. The award-winning poet, historian and photographer has published more than 20 books. All of his books are available on Amazon.

JoAnn Cardle Ross: An Everett native, Ross has published a short memoir titled “Emily.” It is a supernatural story involving attempted suicide and how to overcome it. Note: This is not the JoAnn Ross who writes romance novels. The e-book is free on Amazon through September for National Suicide Prevention Month.
